Is it possible to use a third-party Info-lithium replacement battery in a SONY digital camera?

Hi! Please…I have a SONY DSC-S50 Cyber-shot digital camera, and I believe it’s time for a battery replacement. The model number on my battery is: NP-FM50. This battery is the original battery and it came with the camera. It’s labled as an “infolithium” battery. Please, is it mandatory that I order a SONY replacement battery, in particular, or am I safe in ordering a compatible lithium battery online or elsewhere? If so, which online site is recommended? One site suggested that sometimes third-party batteries don’t always work in SONY digital cameras. Sony, naturally, suggests that I use their brand of accessories. I am still quite the novice and any/all advice regarding this subject will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I’ve had luck using compatible batteries for my old Sony digicam. But I heard that the newer Sonys have a way of checking if the battery is a genuine Sony infolithium battery.
Best to work with a local seller that has a good return policy – such as Best Buy or Circuit City.
