Although flags, banners or pennants, as they area sometimes called, are more commonly seen in the armed forces Even families have been known to have a custom flag made to represent their family name. Flag stores will make up practically any design that is imaginable and it is quite a unique idea. These pennants can be embroidered, printed or even painted onto the back cloth to achieve the desired finish which is required.

Perhaps the most common pennants are flown on ships or vessels. Indeed, you will often see those very large tankers flying pennants from all over the world. These ships, although they may be from one country, may actually be registered, for tax or licensing purposes, in another country.

Government departments may also have their own pennants flying outside office buildings or complexes and the ‘top brass’ will have miniature versions on their office desks. Some diplomats will give a table top pennant as a complimentary gift when they are visiting foreign countries and it is considered to be a very high compliment to receive one.

The original purpose of having distinctive pennants was for identification purposes particularly in places where this was connected with safety. War zones, for example, are the very place where flying a pennant could probably save lives. In days gone by if a soldier was lost in fog, smoke, or under fire, how else would he be able to find his unit? These pennants, usually of bright colors, were flown from a rod or staff, or set atop a hill or tall building, so that the men could see where to rally. If a foe’s pennant was captured many would assume that those serving under that banner had given up or surrendered. Therefore, these banners or pennants became synonymous with corps pride. They would be defended to the death sometimes.

At sea, where there was no electronic communication that we have today, pennants were used as a form of ‘Morse code’ to signal and send messages to other vessels. This was far easier than trying to catch up with passing ships and sometimes, even today; they are used when other signaling methods or electronic signaling is not available. When ships are in port you will often see strings of pennants decorating the ship. Each individual pennant has a meaning and they actually spell out a message.

Eventually, these pennants have evolved into national banners or pennants. Colors are sometimes symbolic of the country of origin. Indeed most African pennants will contain the colors black, green, yellow and red. All these colors mean something in Africa and Rastafarians adopted red, yellow and green as their own.

Schools too have adopted the pennants particularly for their teams to carry to matches. These are normally made up of the school colors and they are carried with pride. Who would have thought that a simple piece of cloth would have been with us for centuries and become so important that even presidents and kings swear their allegiance to them?

Connor Sullivan bought some Custom Flags for the local high school booster club. The school purchased custom flags from an internet flag store for the local high school.

How can I make my room as liveable as possible?

I have just moved to the UK from the US for my last year of college and I find myself getting very homesick for the US very often. Can anyone suggest ways for me to make my room as comfortable and as “American” as possible? Like ways for me to decorate, besides putting up flags and college pennants.

what about framing the pictures of your friends/ family? hummm what about favourite football team? (or any other sport you like, you support) favourite American movie posters (Star wars, etc)? American architecture posters (Golden gate Bridge, Empire State Building, Statue of liberty, grand Canyon ? the picture of a big hamburger, yummy? LoL (kidding)

I don’t know anything that reminds you of your traditions, the place somehow you feel you belong to, but..by the way try to enjoy your stay there! If you decided to go to U.K it is not to feel homesick, eh?
Good Luck, just use your imagination and creativity!
